About us

The working group is a network of academics, who share the passion and interest for the arctic and subarctic regions that is the North of America, Europe and Russia.

Map of the Arctic by Mercator 1595We aim to disseminate scientific and popular topics on the North to a wider mostly German speaking public. And we see us as “speakers” for the people of the North and want to spread information on their social, political, environmental and cultural concerns. For this purpose we are organizing public events such as conferences, exhibitions, film nights, round tables etc.

Besides that, our members, being specialists in his and her field, also have joined to work on common scientific projects. Although, the focus of our work lies in the living situation of the peoples of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Scandinavia and Siberia, (most of our members are social and cultural anthropologists, historians and philologists) we aim to be interdisciplinary and are open to the sciences, arts and popular culture.

History

With this idea in 1997 several anthropology students of the department of Cultural- and Social Anthropology at the University of Vienna decided to found our own association called the A.A.S. And since then we were successful in organizing the international conference “Siberia and the Circumpolar North, Contributions by Anthropologists and NGOs” in 2000, and were publishing the book “Cracks in the Ice”. For the chronology of events see “past activities”.

Members

The A.A.S. comprises a small number of people but over the years constantly new members are joining. Just recently our association was growing by scholars working on Scandinavia and Swedish Sami. Learn more about the special fields of each member in the about us>members section.

Membership

Our working group is an open community for ambitious people, who share the love and interest in the circumpolar regions; therefore we welcome new members of all fields into our association.

Our motto is: The group grows with the input of its members!

We meet every first Tuesday of the month at a Jour Fixe to exchange news and to work on current projects. The membership fee is 30 € per year. You can join by sending an email and visiting our next Jour Fixe to meet our people. To start or to cancel the membership is a simple and informal procedure. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact us.
